The Plan

Physical therapy as the treatment.

Healthcare can feel fragmented, with testing and interventions offered before proven physical and neurological rehabilitation is ever considered. At Vertigo Atlanta & Physical Therapy, a thorough evaluation of your vestibular system, craniofacial/TMJ anatomy, and vertebral column comes first.

Before any treatment

Every case starts with the same three-step diagnostic process.

Each step narrows the answer: what your eyes reveal, what the pattern means, and how it connects to your neck, jaw, and cervical spine.

01

Infrared Video Frenzel Assessment with dynamic Functional Equilibrium Assessment

Infrared lenses remove visual fixation so involuntary eye movements that are invisible in normal light become recordable. Findings are paired with dynamic balance and equilibrium testing.

  • Spontaneous and gaze-evoked nystagmus
  • Positional testing for canal involvement
  • Functional equilibrium and VOR behavior
02

Analysis of Nystagmus patterns

The recorded pattern determines the branch: peripheral vestibular dysfunction, central vestibular mechanisms, or cervical proprioceptive contribution.

  • Peripheral: organ involvement vs. hypofunction / neuropathy
  • Central: post-concussion or central neurologic mechanisms
  • Cervical proprioceptive deficits
03

Cervical Orthopedic Examination: Craniofacial / TMJ / Cervical Spine

The final layer connects vestibular findings with cervical mechanics, craniofacial pain, and TMJ behavior, then sets the direction for treatment.

  • Craniofacial and TMJ evaluation
  • Cervical spine mechanics
  • Targeted manual and rehabilitative care

What Dr. Crespo addresses
The Plan, in our own words

Why physical therapy is the test and the treatment.

At times our healthcare system can seem fragmented and wasteful. All too often patients are the victims of defensive medicine, where unnecessary medical testing and ineffective or invasive interventions are implemented far before proven physical and neurological rehabilitation.

Vertigo Atlanta & Physical Therapy is here to rehab the interrelated body systems that often plague functional well-being. These systems are frequently responsible for a myriad of symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, motion sickness or motion sensitivity, unsteadiness or poor balance, unsteady vision, facial pain, ear pain, jaw pain, tinnitus, headaches, migraines, brain fog, and neck and back stiffness. At Vertigo Atlanta you will receive a thorough evaluation that assesses the function of your vestibular system, craniofacial/mandibular anatomy (TMJ), and vertebral column, to create a treatment plan that addresses the entire system as a whole.

These symptoms are commonly the result of a structural and neurological movement disorder or deficit. Unfortunately, our healthcare system will often direct a patient through a long list of extensive diagnostic testing just to “test” the possible cause behind their symptoms.

At Vertigo Atlanta & Physical Therapy, physical therapy serves as both “the test” and “the treatment.” This routinely saves the patient significant time and money, since these symptoms are commonly overlooked from the beginning as having their origin within the scope of physical rehabilitation.

Your body is built to be resilient, and it is built for movement, with the integration of all body systems. When dynamic human movement is eliminated, these interrelated systems begin to struggle. Traditional, generic treatment programs force rehab needs to be dealt with in isolation, as if the problem existed in a vacuum — that could not be further from the truth, and it will not correctly restore your body.

At Vertigo Atlanta & Physical Therapy, you will not only obtain relief and resolution of symptoms, but you will be fully educated and empowered to self-manage your condition now and into the future.

My invitation to you

From Dr. Jose Crespo, DPT.

  • It’s time to put down the Meclizine bottle and fix your equilibrium with proven neurologic rehab strategies.
  • It’s time to stop relying on pain medications and compensatory strategies, such as a “soft food diet,” to manage facial pain and migraines.
  • It’s time to be proactive about the health of your neck and spine and allow full-spectrum rehab strategies to unlock your full potential for fluid, pain-free movement.
  • It’s time to accept that your physical limitations require movement as the foundation of your rehabilitation and your path to true recovery.
